Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin and Zyban are all pharmaceutical brand names of bupropion pills manufactured and sold by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.

Wellbutrin is a common antidepressant indicated for treatment of bipolar seasonal affective disorder. Its main ingredient is bupropion which is a dopamine indicated for treatment of clinical depression. It is also used to treat anxiety and social phobia that comes with depression.

Wellbutrin has also been shown to be effective in reducing the severity and symptoms of nicotine cravings. Combined with other medications, the pill has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of obesity.

Some success has also been shown in reducing the symptoms of ADDH or attention deficit hyper activity disorder. It has also been shown to be quite effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Despite the apparent benefits, there is evidence linking Wellbutrin to birth defects when used during pregnancy. A report published by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology found that bupropion, the main ingredient in Wellbuprin is associated with the risk of cardiac birth defects.

The report released in July after comprehensive studies found that pregnant mothers who used Wellbutrin within the first trimester ran a greater risk of having a child born with heart defects.

These Wellbutrin birth defects include:

Heart ventricle outflow track defects
Ventricular septal defects
PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborn)
Atrial septal defect

These conditions have been linked to taking Wellburin or some of its derivatives during the first few months of pregnancy. The adverse side effects of the drug were however kept under wraps by the company. This has prompted the Welbutrin birth defect lawsuit to be filed against the company for not properly explaining the drugs reaction.

With over forty thousand babies born with congenital heart defects every year, the case against wellbutrin birth defects is a strong one. There has been a connection between congenital birth defects and ingestion of teratogenic drugs during pregnancy. These are pharmaceutical drugs or other substances capable of interfering with the development of a foetus and ultimately causing serious birth defects.

Bupropion is a mild teratogenic substance and two in a thousand births by mothers on wellbutrin therapy run the risk of giving birth to babies with heart deformities.
